So
many years, so many films. Triumphs and disasters, but never a cross
word exchanged. The high point has to be "Secrets & Lies": no script,
no known actors, I demanded a huge amount of money, on the basis
of a rough cut I had screened a week earlier. You believed me, and
we all were ecstatic with the success. But oh, "Underground", the
heartache it caused us all. We put you through possibly the worst
delivery in history, which aged us all 10 years at last, and after
all that, a searing article in Le Figaro turned all the french speakers
away from the movie, leaving our masterpiece in box office tatters.
"It doesn't matter", we all said, "it is still one of the great
cinematic milestones of the decade", but secretly we were devastated.
Thank God friendship and a similar taste in movies kept us all going.
It has always been, and continues to be such a pleasure to work
with such a bunch of remarkable people, particularly Eliane, who
fills us all with awe, for what she has achieved.
